Carnivals in August

Rio Carnival
is a wild 4 day celebration, 40 days before Easter. It officially starts on Saturday and finishes on Fat Tuesday with the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday after which we are supposed to abstain from all bodily pleasures. This Carnival with all its excesses is a profane event, is an act of farewell to the pleasures of the flesh. It usually happens in February, the hottest month in the Southern Hemisphere, when the Rio summer is at its peak.

La Tomatina, Bunyol, Valencia, Spain.
La Tomatina festival in Spain stands for 'playing with your food'.Bunol is a ho-hum industrial town, 40km (25mi) from Valencia, quietly going about its own business. At the last Wednesday of August, the town's streets turns into a salsa riot, with over 20,000 revellers pelting each other with large, red, squishy tomatoes.
